hi can anyone help.... i have the hercules instinct running through a rather large mixer for other devices and a mic as the instinct does not have that facility.i want to reduce some of my equipment starting with the attached mixer. is it possible to link  the instinct to the mk4 (not yet purchesed), so i can use a mic in the mk4 but still use my instinct as my backup on another laptop. i always use a cd player as backup but want to do away with it. i still want the security of another device. i thought of connecting the two controlers to the amp in sepperate inputs but not sure if it would be ok and as for the leads i would need seems long winded. i do see that the mk4 does have mic input and has the inputs in the back so i right in thinking this is possible?
thanks steve

Hello,

It works, but I would not do it as you suggest if you don't own an Mk4 because :
- except if to mix on 4 decks (2 deck on Instinct + 2 decks on Mk4), you get no significant bonus on the control surface in using DJ Console Mk4 instead of an Instinct (Instinct controls are in my opinion as good or better than Mk4 controls)
-  the microphone input on the Mk4 is not great (you have great microphone inputs on DJConsole Rmx2 and DJControl Air+: all former DJ console have microphone inputs for multimedia level microphone: enough to talk over the music with multimedia microphone, but not more).

If you only want to use a microphone to talk over the music, I would rather advise you to connect your DJControl Instinct mix output to a line input an analog console, and connect the microphone to a line input of an analog console, for example with a cheap Behringer Xenyx 502 mixer, or if you want a higher end mixer, a Mackie 402-VLZ3

If you want to have 2 controllers to be able to mix on both, and need audio inputs to be able to link the Instinct to the other, I would rather use a higher end controller as second gear, for example with a DJConsole Rmx2, since Rmx2 has not only a very good microphone input, it provides DJ controls you don't get in Instinct, making it a major plus for your mix.

hi thanks maxdjack
i was wondering if the mic input would be upto the job. i do have a very good mixer but its big and just wanted to to bring the gear down in size just a little. ive always had a backup either cd or another laptop or even both (paranoid) when using the other laptop it obviously doesnt have a controller its just virtual dj straight from the laptop so no control and monitoring  so ill prob just keep to what i have unless a good controller comes up if you dont think the mk4 is upto it
thanks again steve

Hi,

The analog consoles I have mentionned as possible port to connect a microphone are smaller than a DJ mixer.

I use a compact Xenyx analog console (not bigger than 9"x12") where I plug
- the RCA mix outputs of my DJ Controller (Rmx2),
- the line output of a receiver for wireless microphones,
- when needed, a second XLR microphone (I already have one plugged on Rmx2),
- and the MP3 player if someone in the audience brings an MP3 player and asks for a track I have not in my hard disk,
so the output of this analog console goes to a secondary input on the PA amplifier.
I connect Rmx2 XLR balanced outputs on the amplifier main input, I play Rmx2 sound directly on the amplifier (while Xenyx console audio input is muted on the amplifier), and in case of need, I cut the audio on the amplifier main input, and replace it with the audio of the amplifier second input (the sound going through the Xenyx).

What limits the quality of the microphone input on Mk4 is (and other multimedia sound boards) is the compatibility with multimedia microphones
- multimedia microphones are electret microphone, they need the membrane to be polarized (electrically charged),
- dynamic microphones (higher end microphones than electret microphones) need no power to polarize the microphone membrane,
so if a microphone input supports multimedia microphones, this input adds a small electric power in the microphone input (to polarize the membrane on the electret microphone), and if the microphone is dynamic, this power adds noise to the microphone : it works, but the audio quality is not as good as the quality would be without this power.

As a result, if a microphone input support multimedia microphones, the audio quality is not as good with dynamic microphones as it would be if this input didn't support multimedia microphones.
The solution is that pro grade devices don't support multimedia microphones, they need dynamic microphone.
As gears as DJ Console Mk4 are compatible with consumer microphones, the microphone audio quality is not good as on higher end gears (Rmx2 and Air+), whose microphone input supports only dynamic microphones.

hi thanks im bit confused now lol .... i best keep it as is as i dont think i understand enough to change .. i have a kam 2000 watt amp with two input types one is jack and other is xlr.. is it possible to run both of these inputs from two seperate controllers  if i understood you this would work just for future reference??
cheers

Hello Steve,

I don't know your Kam amp, so I don't know if it would work with your amp, it depends of how this amp handles the simultaneous connection of 2 audio sources.

**** sorry i mean its a kam kxr2000 not 200

Hello,

Kam KXR2000 has a single input, so you cannot have 2 simultaneous connections on this amplifier.
The best solution would be to connect as hereafter an analog console between the Instinct Mix output and the amplifier, and connect the microphone to the analog console.
