Hello Tim,

Happy New Year!

Knobs resistance depends on 3 factors:
1- temperature: the higher the temperature, the looser the knob (a knob loose at 25°C / 77°F may feel tight at 15°C / 59°F)
2- quantity of grease on the shaft basis : a loose knob means the grease is probably not well spread on the shaft basis. Store your DJControl Inpulse with ground basis down to keep the grease on the shaft basis,
3- cap diameter: the wider the cap, the looser you feel the knob: on DJControl Inpulse 200, the gain cap is small to feel not so loose.

I do not recommend removing the cap, if the cap was inserted tight on the shaft, then removing it may alter the knob.

My suggestion
1) make sure gain knob works : you can see it in the DJ software,
2) store the controller on its base (if it was stored upside down before your used it, then it may cause this loose feeling).
