Have you tested the device with other computers as well to make sure that the problem is not of a local nature and, most importantly, tested the unit with profile programs like MIDI Monitor or MIDI Ox?
What results have you obtained when testing the unit like that?

The question is trivial but have you checked in your control panel that the setting "Enable Proximiy Sensor" is on?
If it is set Off, then the IR sensor is disabled.
