external cds/vinyl through hercules dj console rmx : does the unit have to be switched on for this to work?

im not sure what you mean by "switched on" (since it cannot be turned on or off), but it must be connected to the computers usb port.
after that, it must be selected as the soundcard in the software you wish to use, and the inputs must be enabled (which is not the default for all softwares).
