i am using the hercules rmx to video dj with my pre-existing dj set up. the video mixing works perfectly except for one thing i cannot cue any tracks in the headphones. this is my configuration, please help if you can:
computer specs: hp pavillion dv4 intel core duo t6400 2.00 ghz
ram 2.00 gb
windows vista 32bit service pack 1
my set up: (2) pioneer cdj 1000 mk3
pioneer djm 500 mixer (analog)
serato sl-1 (being used as sound card)
pioneer hdj1000 headphones
hercules dj console rmx
video dj settings: virtual dj version 5.2
inputs: timecodes
outputs: external mixer
sounds cards: asio driver
asio driver: sl 1 driver
ultra-latency asio (checked)
input channels: 1&2 left deck / 3&4 right deck
outputs: left deck ch. 1&2 / right deck ch. 3&4
remote control: hercules
according to your configuration, the serato sl-1 is your soundcard.
since you are only using the controller portion of the rmx, its evident that the headphone ouput cannot be used.

You're right because I've tried everything. The reason why I like it set up the way I have it is (minus the inability to cue in my headphones) is because the Hercules feels more natural. When i hook it up the regular way using the Hercules as both the mixer and sound card it feels so unnatural. There is digital lag, the knobs on the controller are erratic and it just feels like a digital device that doesn't keep up. The way I set it up it only works as you said like a controller. And then when I'm ready to stop video dj'ing and audio dj in my set I can use my regular mixer without having to disconnect or reconnect anything. I just wish i could come up with another way to cue. I can hear the music when my headphones are plugged into my mixer but only the channel that is currently playing. Shux!
Hello Woodstock,
1) You should be able to preview in your headphones when it is connected to the analog mixer.
You can select the channel to preview in your headphones by pushing down the button located on top of the volume fader of each deck (CH-1, CH-2, CH3, CH-4) on the analog mixer, not on DJ Console Rmx since you mix in an analog mixer.
2) I suppose there was a wrong setting in VirtualDJ or in DJ Console Rmx control panel when you have tested DJ Console Rmx since of it doesn't feel unatural at all on my side. I understand you have Vista, a very bad operating system, but if you optimize your settings (stop the Wifi, cut off the internet access, stop the firewall), even Vista should be OK.
Maxdjack,
Thanks for responding. You're right I can hear through my headphones on the analog mixer but I can only hear whatever side is playing. If I am playing on the left deck I can hear that through the headphones but if I try to cue what is on the right (and I do have the button selected above the right fader) I don't hear anything until I move the cross fader to the right. Therefore I am not previewing my mix before it goes to the main output. The only other thing I can think of is possibly buying another sound card instead of using Serato (SL1). I'm thinking if I got another sound card that had a headphone jack in it , which the SL1 does not, maybe I could preview the sound by plugging into that instead of the mixer.
Woodstock,
Both DJ Console Rmx and Serato SL1 are satisfying sound boards for DJing, so please stop changing you hardware each time you meet any difficulty, just take the time to describe your connections between SL1 and DJM 500.
It makes no sense to run non stop from one gear to the other while never taking the time to correct the mistakes in settings, you must just identify the improper setting either in your connections, or in your software.
Please describe where output 1-2 and outputs 3-4 of SL1 are connected.
Maxdjack,
Thank you again for helping me out. The SL1 Line 1 Output is connected to (on DJM 500) Ch1 Cd1/Line AND Line 2 Output is connected to Ch2 CD2/Line. There are no Outputs 3-4 on the SL1.
Hello Woodstock,
Thank you for your answer.
1) Regarding connections
Can you confirm you mean that
- SL1 left deck line out white RCA connector is connected to DJM-500 CH-1 Line White RCA connector
- SL1 left deck line out red RCA connector is connected to DJM-500 CH-1 Line red RCA connector
- SL1 right deck line out white RCA connector is connected to DJM-500 CH-2 CD2/Line White RCA connector
- SL1 right deck line out red RCA connector is connected to DJM-500 CH-2 CD2/Line red RCA connector?
2) Regarding DJM-500 Monitor selector buttons (the 7 push buttons line over the volume faders)
Please confirm that:
- you have disengaged the mixer button (it must be off, otherwhise the mix output will constantly play over the preview)
- when you want to preview the left deck, you push down the button Ch-1 (and no other monitor button must be on)
- when you want to preview the right deck, you push down the button Ch-2 (and no other monitor button must be on).
3) When you mix on an external mixer, you MUST preview in the headphones output of the external mixer, not on the sound card, since it is on the mixer that you select the channel you preview, not in the DJ software.
You can preview on the headphones output of a sound card if you mix inside the software (so when you use the crossfader of the software or of the software DJ controller).
Maxdjack,
I posted a video for you on youtube showing you my set up and the problems I'm having.
Thanks,
Woodstock
Hello Woodstock,
Thank you, now I understand the origin of the issue you meet, even if I don't understand the reason for it.
You are not in external mixer mode (even if VirtualDJ lets you set this mode), you are in internal mixer mode (and that is why you mix on the Rmx crossfader), so what is played on output 1-2 is not left deck but the mix, mixed on DJ Console Rmx.
I will make some testing on my side to see where is the preview streaming.
Thank you so much Maxdjack for looking into this and i appreciate the effort that you have put into helping me resolve my issue.
Hello Woodstock,
I Think the reason why you have erratic results when using the sound card built in the DJ Console Rmx is simply that your 2 Pioneer CDJ players output level saturate the audio inputs in the Rmx when you connect the CDJ players directly to the Rmx.
Can you try the following installation
1) connect 1 CDJ player to DJM-500 Channel 1 input
2) connect the other CDJ player to DJM-500 Channel 2 input
3) On the rotary switch Assign A, select input 1
4) On the rotary switch Assign B, select input 2
5) set the crossfader on deck A
6) Set channel 2 has monitor source with the monitor selector
7) Connect DJM-500 "Master Out 1" output to DJ Console Rmx input 1-2 (set DJ Console Rmx input 1-2 switch on Line)
8) connect DJM-500 "Booth Monitor" output to DJ Console Rmx input 3-4 (set DJ Console Rmx input 3-4 switch on Line)
9) in VirtualDJ, in the sound setup, set
Input = time code
Output = Headphones
Sound card = DJ Console Rmx
Time code config = Ch1&2: Left deck / Ch 3&4: Right deck
Output config = Master: Chan 1&2 / Headphones: Chan 3&4
If the DJM-500 saturates DJ Console Rmx inputs, use the DJM-500 Master level attenuator button to avoid saturation.
In this setting, you don't use your SL1 sound card and you use DJ Console Rmx headphones output for the preview.
Maxdjack,
I'm trying the settings that you suggested but for some reason all I'm getting is the timecode "hiss" from from the cdj's. The crazy thing is I can preview the hiss. I can have the hiss playing on deck 1 and preview the hiss on deck 2. We obviously must be very close to resolving this issue. I just need sound to come out now instead of the hiss. One thing I did notice is that on step #8, I was unable to "set the DJ Console Rmx input 3-4 switch on Line" I couldn't because it wasn't active, this option was greyed out.
Hello Woodstock,
If the input 3-4 is grey out, it probably means the Rmx ASIO setting is 24-bit: in DJ Console Rmx control panel, set the ASIO setting on 16-bit instead of 24-bit.
