hercules 4-mx firmware issue

hello, i think i may have screwed up trying to update my firmware for a new 4-mx console that i traded from a friend. its brand new from hercules, apparently it was to replace a faulty 4-mx that still had warantee on it.

so i started doing the firmware upgrade after loading the driver. i downloaded the latest driver. im currently using the newest 15" macbook pro with retina display.

at some point i could get the stop cue play buttons to light up. but however, i got a message that my firmware didnt upgrade completely or there was some kind of error. i then opted for the manual firmware upgrade method instead. after trying to load the firmware audio, i recieved an error in the updater and it said the firmware update has failed to load it. i went back to the auto updater and it said my firmware audio has fail to update, but that i have the latest version and can continue on with the controller firmware. cool, so i clicked continue, and it errored on me again, this time for the controler firmware. i went back to the manual updater, tried loading both controler and audio firmware files, and click update. neither one of them manage to load (recieved error again) so i tried launching the auto firmware updater. this time though it wouldnt launch from my macbook. i tried launching the autoupdater and it stopped recognizing the controller, ive tried unplugging and replugging it back in pressing down on the mic on/off and the load on left & right deck button, nothing seem to work.

so now im afraid ive fucked up the firmware and it wont let me recognize my controller anymore. is there anyone that can help me diagnose what is wrong here?

here are some additional information:

as of right now, when plugging in the usb, the only button that light up is the mic on/off button. the stop play cue buttons stopped lighting up. i remember when they lit up the first time, i could see the 4mx recognized in the audio midi setup app, as well as the system information app. after fiddling around with trying to update the firmware, the controller is unable to be recognized in any of the apps.

also, inbetween attempts to try and update the firmware, i used both the right and left usb ports. im not sure if that have to do with anything, but i believe they are both usb 3.0 port.

Would you happen to have a powered USB hub you could put between the computer and the console ?

There's been similar issues with the MacBook AIR where this helped.

Or do you have access to another computer you could try the procedure on?

I was being skeptical about the USB too because I've heard of similar problems with USB 3.0

Last night I tried connect to my friend's gaming windows laptop with a normal USB 2.0 port and attempt to update the firmware through windows. The problem was the firmware updater never popped up. I launched the manual updater and had problem getting the console to be recognized when plugging in the USB cable. Tried doing it with the mic button held down, as well as a few other suggested buttons to push down while connecting, no dice.

My fear is that the improperly installed firmware might have caused the recognion/connection problem. Perhaps there is a way to reset the firmware like on the RMX?

A Firmware update is a delicate process and obviously not a 100% foolproof. However, the process is built in a way that it should be recoverable in most cases. If not, it might still be recoverable, but would certainly require being opened and reprogrammed.

You mentionned the unit was a replacement for one that went wrong. Do you know exactly what was the problem with the original unit?

My friend told me his original unit was acting weird a few months in and some of the buttons or faders started to fail or acting glitchy. Hercules sent him a brand new device a few months later to replace the faulty one. He then gave me the new one, in mint condition, because by the time hercules sent him the replacement device he had already picked up a new controller.

Anyway, he said he has never used it before so everything in there should've been fresh, and a firmware update should be in order. The firmware update failed on me though, and I can't get the controller to be recogized anymore in order to flash the firmware files. The mic on/off buttons still light up and then fade out everytime i connect the USB to the controller, that's as much confirmation that I have right now to hope that the device is not 100% dead. I'm not sure what's the next step though, I may have to contact hercules again.

You might have noticed the procedure I've suggested on that other forum thread:

- Go to Applications > Hercules > DJSeries > updater and double click on manual_update to launch the manual Firmware updater.

- Next, connect the console to the USB port while holding the Load on Left deck  and Load on right deck buttons. Keep holding until the PLAY, STOP and CUE button lit up for both decks.

- If everything goes normally, the console should "appear" to the updater: for Firmware Controller, under Current, it should indicate Boot.

- Click Open Ctrl..., select the file 4MX_PIC.djc, then Open. A number should now appear under Available.

Check the available box in the Flash column, then Update! to proceed

Does this process completes properly ?

If so, upon reconnection, Under Current, you should have 13 and 15 for Controller and Audio respectively.

I just tried doing that on my Macbook pro. The console is not showing up on the manual updater.

Keep in mind that at some point last week when I was trying to update the firmware, that the manual updater actually recognizes my device and the play/cue/stop buttons actually lit up. The only problem was that when I was trying to flash the the firmware files, that it said "bulk transfer to the device failed during TUSB update". So the manual firmware update actually failed on me, and I was considering retrying it. The problem with it is that after i reinstalled everything and reboot my mac to prepare for the reinstallation, the console was no longer being recognized by the laptop and the play/stop/cue buttons no longer lit up. I tried bringing it to my friend's Window 7 laptop and I still couldn't get it to be recognized by the computer to try doing the manual firmware install again.

I looked up similar issues and it seem like this person figured it out by using a powered USB 2.0 hub.

I might try that out when I have the chance later this week. Do you think that might help or is the console totally broken because of me trying to update the firmware multiple times last week despite seeing continuous message that the firmware has failed to update?

As mentionned previously, in most cases, an incorrect firmware update should be recoverable, and everything I've been asking you to do so far (including using a powered USB hub) was towards making your device workable again.

But there is also slight the possibility that the firmware was damaged, maybe irremediably. If this is the case, no matter how much you try, it will have to be replaced.

I am exactly on the same boat and I think my firmware needs to be reprogrammed. Where can I do this in the San Francisco Bay Area? The firmware was damaged while I was following exactly the steps mentioned in the Hercules website. I also posted in the other thread:  http://www.herculesdjmixroom.com/en-gb/forum/en-hardware/011285/?start=20
