hi there! i was wondering if the 5.1 or 4.1 of the hercules gamesurround muse xl pocket lt3 will work on the mac os x. on the hercules page it only says "mac os x (stereo audio output)" on the minimum configuration, as i dont know what this means...
i have read this post: http://www.herculesdjmixroom.com/en-gb/forum/en-hardware/002034/
but although it shows a way to use 4.1 on mac os x, i really want to know if i can have 4.1 or 5.1 speakers on a mac os x with the hercules gamesurround muse xl pocket lt3.
thanks in advance!

Hello Necroman,

1) Yes, you can use Muse XL Pocket LT3 on Mac OS X.
Since Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), Mac OS X Core Audio supports USB multichannel sound cards as Muse Pocket LT3 to play several sound tracks simultaneously.
For example, in Mac OS 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6, you can use a Muse XL Pocket in DJing to play:
- the stereo mix on output 5-6, where you connect your speakers
- the stereo preview on output 1-2, where you connect your heaphones.

2) But it is not sure you will be happy with a 5.1 speaker kit in Mac OS, as Mac OS cannot virtualize the stereo sound into 5.1 in the same way as Windows virtualizes the stereo sound in 5.1, so on Mac OS
- if your sound source is stereo (as audio CDs or iTunes music), you get sound only in the front speakers, with no sound in the subwoofer if you connect a 5.1 speaker kit
- it is only with a multichannel source (as DVD Video, and some videos) that you can get 5.1 sound in Mac OS.

An explanation on how to get 5.1 surround sound in Mac OS is on MacRumors

So I guess if i'll use it on my MBP 13" with Snow Leopard on it,
i'll be able to listen 6ch with ac3 (for exeple) sources, and stereo with
2ch sources (as mp3, stereo films, etc..).

I have just to connect the card just out of the box to my mac, and sorround sounds
will be played as REAL sorround, and stereo as stereo.

With the link to Macrumors that you posted, i guess i'll be able to play ALSO
mp3's and stereo film as "FAKE (or virtual)" sorround.

Did i understood the problem?

Thank you,
hope i'm near to be your customare.

Hello Greatkekko,

Yes, if you connect a 6-channel sound card as a Muse Pocket LT3 on a Mac in Snow Leopard, and if you play a 6-channel audio format with a 6-channel codec on Muse Pocket LT3, you will have 6-channel playback if you have enabled the 6-channel format for the Muse Pocket LT3 (In Applications> Utilities> Audio & MIDI setup>Output).

I don't know if there is an official 6-channel AC3 player in Mac OS (I think Apple DVD player only decodes AC-3 in stereo), but I think VLC can play AC3-DVD in 6-channel on Mac OS.
