i cant seem to get my headphones to work on a external sound card (vantec usb 7.1 audio adapter). i am currently running traktor 2.0 pro with a hercules mp3 e2 controller. i can get the monitoring working in virtual dj but not traktor. please help thank you .

I don't know your external soundcard, but I think that you can do monitoring by setting it in traktor.
Go into traktor's setting then :
1- In Audio Setup, choose your Vantec soundcard as audio device.
2- In "Output ROuting", choose the "correct" output routing for your vantec, I think Output Monitor 3/4, Output Master 1/2, Outpout Record doesn't matter.
Take a look at the following procedure. It was written for different USB 7.1 card (Hercules Muse Pocket), but the procedure should be more or less the same for your Vantec
