hey guys. hope you can help me out with a technical problem.
this weekend i played a job where i was supposed to play with 2x pioneer cdj-1000 and a djm-800 mixer. since im not too experienced on this setup yet and had to play for six hours i brought my own rmx console along with my laptop with vdj pro 7 and planned to just stick to that. i hooked up the console to one of the channels on the mixer through phono and thought that would run smoothly. but apparently the rmx gained the output volume to insane levels, and messed up the bass. the volume display on the channel of the external mixer was in the red constantly, never diving at all. i had to gain the channel down on the external mixer to next to nothing, and i still couldnt put the master volume on the rmx to 100% without the sound oversteering (i dont know if that is the right word for it, thats what its called in my language). furthermore i had to adjust the bass level on every single track to about 20%, and the medium and treble levels to about 125% (and it didnt help that i didnt have a monitor speaker) on the rmx before it sounded even remotely acceptable. the dj that played after me used the original setup with cds, and the sound was much better and louder.
does anyone have an idea what went wrong here? what did i do wrong and what should i be aware of next time im in a situation like this?
hope one of you wise guys can provide me with an answer 🙂
Hello,
I suppose you have set the DJM-800 input for DJ Console Rmx in Phono instead of Line level: if the switch on the top panel of DJM-800 for channels 3 and 4 was on phono instead of Line, there is no wonder the DJM-800 saturates.
The Rmx outputs are line-level outputs, there is no phono output level on a DJ Console Rmx, so it will always saturate when connected to a mixer phono input.
In your setting, on the rear panel of DJM-800, you should
- connect the 2 CDJ-1000 units on input 1 and 2 of your DJM-800, set the switches on CD on DJM-800 for inputs 1 and 2,
- connect the DJ Console Rmx on input 3 (and 4 if you set the mix for external mixer in your DJ software), set the switches on Line for inputs 3 and 4,
and on the top panel of DJM-800
- set the the switches on CD on DJM-800 top panel for channels 1 and 2,
- set the the switches on Line on DJM-800 top panel for channels 3 and 4.
