hi. firstly id like to ask if anyone could recommend an external vu meter (hardware) that i could use with my hercules 4mx? the vdj vu meter is really really bad and doesnt really show you when your going in the red.
you might say my second question should be posted on the vdj forum but i did. and no one responded. and its been ages since i posted it.. so i had hoped you guys could help me.
here goes: i dont know if such a thing exists. but i have a similar app on my iphone4.. - i want a graphic equaliser that shows frequency bands being hit by the music in realtime. much like youd see on some hi-fi systems. so i know about the 32 band eq you can get for vdj. thats not what i want. i can already change the eq with my mixer. i want a visual aid so i can see how much headroom i have so i can boost. that way i can see if im potentially causing distortion or clipping by increasing lets say the bass. the vu meter will show you if your going in the red overall and thats not what i want. firstly i can cause distortion by not going in the red on the vu. second some of you may say use your ears. i dont think its always that obvious.. thirdly i want to be able to know how far i can push the high mid and low before i cause distortion. i always try to cut frequencies before i boost them but this would be useful for me and for obvious reasons. i want to milk my mixer for everything its got.
is there  such a thing? maybe an external hardware of some sort. it can be software as well if anyone knows.
thanks for helping.

Hello Koz,

1) For an external level vu-meter, it is a matter of price.
You can buy expensive vu meter as American Audio DB Display or Dak DB-90, or you can make one by yourself, very cheap with LEDs as this one or this one or even cheaper with analogue display.

2) What do you mean by "The vdj VU meter is really really bad and doesn't really show you when your going in the red" ?
Do you mean
a) the viewer is too slow to show you are going in the red
b) or that its colours are too optimistic and should show as red what is orange?
For a) I suggest you try to optimize your computer settings to save CPU time (removing background tasks, disabel the wifi...), and for b) you can edit a skin to change the colours.

3) For a graphic equalizer display, you have solutions as:
- low cost hardware do it yourself devices as this one,
- hifi equalizers as Kenwood
- or, if you have found a nice equalizer on iPad operating in real time, you can connect a 48-KHz USB sound card to your iPad via the USB dongle included in iPad camera connection kit, and digitize the audio output of the 4-Mx on the line input in of this USB sound card.
