Hi forum members and Hercules tech support,
I have a Hercules P32 DJ controller and it is a descent piece of kit but the rotary encoder are just crap.
I would like to replace the 5 rotary encoders with better ones. Currently I only know that these encoders has 24 steps.
Could somebody from Hercules tech support (or forum member) pleas tell me what the specifications for these encoders are?!
Thanks

Hello Jolla,
1) The community forum is a forum for users.
The area to talk with Hercules Tech support is https://support.hercules.com/en/contact-en/
2) Rotary encoders on P32 DJ are Taiwan Alpha RE12CF-41-25F-24P.
Hi,
Thanks for answering!
I wrote Hercules Tech support as I was thinking that they might be lurking here on the forum.
As I understand you have no connection to Hercules?
Can I ask how certain you are regarding your answer? I ask as I'll be ordering the components before I open up the P32 DJ.
As I'm not happy with the original (Taiwan Alpha rotary encoders) I have bean looking for a different manufacture, can I ask you to have a look at this potential replacement component , Bourns PEC12R-4225F-S0024. Do you think that this would work?
Your help is much appreciated!

Hello Jolla,
UX Team = currently 2 persons not connected to Hercules support, but connected to Hercules product development and beta test.
Hercules tech support may indeed look at the forum to understand requests from users who post both on tech support & on forum, but I do not know if they post on the forum.
Bourns encoder seems pin-to-pin compatible with the Taiwan Alpha encoder, so it should be usable (but mechanical tolerances may call for adjustments to insert pins in the circuit board or knobs on shafts) and if I had to change encoders, I would try the Bourns.
Can you precise what you do not like in the Taiwan Alpha as they are still OK for me?
I try to protect my mobile gears from shock & dust, so I added a decksaver cover to my P32 DJ.
Hi UX Team,
I have a brand new P32 DJ (just purchased it from Hercules) but the 5 rotary encoders feels sloppy and loose (from the get go). The Browse one (top centre) is extra loose and sloppy and the steps are not distinct at all, if I don't guide it (turn slowly) to a stop it can "land" between two steps.
I have been in contact with Hercules support but they have been less then understanding and want me to make a video showing the problems I have (I have told them I don't know how to show the problem in a video... it is akin to making a video showing I have a headache or similar).
I have been offered to return it and get my money back but I have to ship it at my own expense (Shipping with Fedex, UPS etc. from Sweden is prohibited expensive, about 50EUR and not the 5EUR I paid for shipping when I got the unit from Hercules).
I like the unit, it is a nice piece of kit (if it wasn't for the rotary encoders).

Hello Jolla,
Thanks for your answer.
I have a different perception of P32 DJ rotary encoders as for me the steps are precise enough but indeed each step's detent is light, especially with the caps diameter (if the caps diameter was smaller, you would feel more the detent at each step). I do not see how to show it in a video since as the feeling is in the fingers rather than in the eyes.
Hi UX Team,
Can I ask you if you know when opening up the Hercules P32 DJ if there are plastic clips that I would need a guitar picks or similar to release or is it only held together with the screws on the bottom (it would appear that there is one screw under the sticker)?
Jolla
Hello Jolla,
I am currently travelling so I will look at my P32 DJ when coming back from my travel in the middle of next week.
Hi UX Team,
Thanks, I'm in no rush as I'm still awaiting the parts (the encoders).
Jolla
Hello Jolla,
You do not need any guitar pick to unclip anything on P32 DJ, and there is no hidden screw under the label with the barcode serial number.
To open the case, you must remove
- 13 screws (3 around the center, 10 on the sides),
- all caps.
The area requiring special care, depending on how the device has aged, is the area of the audio connectors, as there are 2 printed circuit boards one over the other in that area:
- the board with USB connector and audio plugs goes below
- the board with potentiometers and encoders goes on top.
Hi UX Team,
Thanks for the information I appreciate it!
Hi UX Team,
I'm very grateful for your help finding a potential replacement rotary encoder and I wonder if you also could help me with the part numbers for the;
Slide potentiometer
Rotary Potentiometer
Just in case I'll need to replace them in the future.
Again, thanks for your help!
